| The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi
Limited (ESCOM Ltd) is a limited liability company incorporated
under the Company’s Act of 1998. Its mandate is
to generate, transmit, distribute electricity and supply
electricity.
ESCOM is 99% owned by the Malawi Government
with the Malawi Development Corporation (MDC) owning
1%.
ESCOM remains the only company that generates, transmit
and distribute electricity on commercial terms in the
country. Most of the power is generated from a number
of power stations along the shire river.
To improve business efficiency and service delivery,
ESCOM is divided into four distinct Business Units (BU)
namely:
All the four Business Units operate on their own as
separate companies. They have their own Director, Administration,
Finance and Human Resources.
ESCOM is faced with a big challenge of meeting the
ever growing demand for electric power. This challenge
has seen ESCOM put in extra efforts to meet the growing
demand starting from generation, transmission and all
the way to distribution.
These challenges have put ESCOM at a cross-road for
deciding to move forward while moving from the comfort
zone of having surplus electricity in the past years
to a strained period. The major challenge is building
new capacity to satisfy the higher demand for electricity
that accompanies strong national economic growth.
Notable projects include:
- Mocambique Interconnection Project
- Implementation of Kapichira Hydroelectric Power
Scheme
- Phase II
- Implementation of a Comprehensive
Generation Power Plant Rehabilitation Project
- Karonga-Kayelekera 66kV line
- Salima-Chintheche-Karonga Reinforcement
ESCOM plans to remain competitive and supply quality
and uninterrupted power supply to its customers.
