Distribution
provides interface with the customer. ESCOM has an estimated
200,000 customers. Three sub companies namely, Southern
Electricity Supply (SES), Central Electricity Supply
(CES) and Northern Electricity Supply (NES) run distribution
at regional levels.
Distribution business unit is responsible for distribution
and supply of electricity throughout the country. Operating
under the directorate of Distribution and Customer Services,
the business unit which operates as a commercial entity
provides interface between ESCOM system and its customers.
It is responsible for the operation and maintenance
of medium and low voltage lines. These are the 33 and
11 kilovolts as well as the 400/230 volts lines together
with associated equipment.
The main functions of the unit are:
- Connecting new customers
- Maintaining and operating the electrical distribution
network
- Metering and billing of customers
- Collecting revenue.
The business unit is expected to sell electricity
units at a profit. Currently, ESCOM provides electricity
to approximately 200,000 customers spread across domestic,
general, commercial and industrial.

- Marketing
- Malawi Rural Electrification Programme
- Design
- Performance Monitoring
- Construction
Access to electricity at the moment is 7.9% and rising.
We expect to reach 20% by 2010.
At the same time ESCOM does export power to some border
towns of Lundazi in Zambia, Milanje, Mandimba, Zobwe
and Villa Ulongwe in Mocambique. This is a source of
much needed foreign exchange.
